We talked to Katya on the phone yesterday. We were so excited to call and surprise her with the news that we would be coming in June and would probably see her on June 10th. However, somehow she already knew we were coming and insisted that we were coming on May 27th, as that was the date she was told! Needless to say, she was disappointed that she was going to have to wait two more weeks to see us but was somewhat consoled by the fact that we were going to take her home with us at the end of the trip - since she thought that we were really just coming to visit and that we would leave and come back later in the year.
Anyway, after she realized that she would be going home with us soon, she decided to let us know some of the things that she wanted, such as a puppy, a cell phone, and her own room. Oh boy! We also told her that Alex had bought matching shorts for her and Allie the other day and she informed us that she did not want matching shorts! She is probably not going to like the matching dresses that we bought for her and Allie then, but she will have to deal with it because they will look so cute going to court in them and we hope that it will show the judge that we really want to make her part of our family.
At the end of the call, in an attempt to keep us on the phone longer, Katya told first me, then Alex, then me again (and then we cut her off by telling her that we really did have to go) that she "very, very, very, very, very, very, very loves us". She is going to be a handful - that is for sure - but she will definately make our life interesting!

SDA Date!!!!
We got our SDA date!!!! It isn't May (whew!) but Tuesday, June 9th. So, it is official - we are going to the Ukraine! I am thrilled and scared at the same time and overwhelmed by all the stuff we have to do before we go. So many thoughts are going through my mind - what do we need to take, is Tony going to be OK going with us, how are things going to turn out with Katya's brother. But I am so excited to see Katya and give her a great big hug and kiss! I had a dream a couple of nights ago that she was with us and when I gave her a hug it felt almost like she was really here. Now - seeing her is so close that I can hardly wait!

SDA Date - still waiting
We are still waiting to find out our SDA date but had a little bit of news that I was excited (and anxious about) that I wanted to post. Although we don't know our SDA date, we sent an email to the adoption agency on Thursday, May 14th to make sure that our paperwork had really been submitted on May 13th. We didn't hear anything back until today, so I honestly thought that they probably hadn't really submitted it and didn't want to tell us that. However, the response we got today said that the dossier was really submitted on May 13th and that the SDA told the adoption agency that our date "could be sooner than we expected" - such as the last week in May! This is both exciting and stressfull news, since we want to go and get Katya as soon as possible but still have so much to do before we go. Aaaahhh!!! For all of you that have been through the process already, I will be picking your brains at the lunch on Thursday for any words of advice and items to take with us. I already know to take lice shampoo (ugh!) - thanks Julee!

Submission Date
We had some adoption news today - our "submission date" is May 13th! For those of you that are not familiar with the adoption process, this is our understanding of how it works from this point on:
First, our translated dossier will be submitted to the SDA (State Department of Adoption) in Ukraine on May 13th.
Then, the SDA will review the dossier and give us an invitation to come to the Ukraine to adopt. Hopefully, if things go well, our SDA appointment for Katya will be the first week in June. So, it looks like we will probably be there at the same time as the Benson's, which will be awesome! (NOTE: We are submitting two dossiers, one for Katya and one for Sasha. We will delay our SDA date for Sasha with the hope that things in his region will change and we can possibly go and get him later in the year or early next year.)
Then, the crew will board an airplane and about 24 hours later be in the Ukraine. The "crew" will consist of the following: Alex, me, Tony, Allie (maybe), and my mom. The thought of a 24 hour trek with a 4 month old, is not an exciting thought for me (or for all the other people that have to be on an airplane with us!) but means that we are one step closer to bringing Katya home!
Once we get to the Ukraine, we meet with the SDA, they ask us a bunch of questions about why we want to adopt, and then give us their blessing (hopefully!). We haven't heard of them turning anybody down...
After the SDA gives us permission, then we will get to go see Katya! If we have our way, we will be taking the train, as I hear it is much cheaper than hiring a driver. However, it is also my understanding that you have exactly two minutes to get you and all your luggage onto the train or it will leave without you. With strollers and luggage for three girls this makes me very nervous, which might be incentive to make sure we pack light! Katya will have to write a letter stating that she wants us to adopt her. We will also go and meet Katya's 15 year old brother to see what he is like and whether or not he wants to adopted or if he will give us permission to adopt Katya and not him. I don't like this unknown - not knowing whether we will be bringing him home with us or not - but I suppose this is the best way to handle this situation...
After Katya (and possibly her brother) makes it known that they want to be adopted, more paperwork is prepared and the goal is to get a court date as quickly as possible - which will probably be one to two weeks out. While we are waiting to make our appearance in court, we get to visit Katya everyday when she gets out of school. I am already trying to come up with things that we can do to entertain Katya, Allie, and Tony. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The judge hasn't said no to anybody that we know before us so we are hoping that he doesn't say no to us...
